Plans to replace the Norway Maple in Ashbourne’s Victoria Square have been announced after an assessment of its condition. Although the tree was originally intended to be kept as part of the Ashbourne Reborn project, excavation revealed significant root damage and poor growth due to its planting environment.

Expert evaluations, including an independent review, determined that the tree could not be recovered, resulting in the decision to remove it. A new Liquidambar tree—approximately 4 metres tall and suited for urban areas—will be planted during ongoing works to provide immediate landscape continuity.
The replacement process includes the installation of a root protection system to support the long-term health of the new tree. According to Councillor David Hughes, the new tree has been selected to match the requirements of Victoria Square.

The Ashbourne Reborn programme, valued at £15.9 million, is funded by the UK Government and managed by Derbyshire County Council in collaboration with local partners.
